STRETCH MARKS & SCARS

These are caused by pregnancy, weight gain, or extreme weight loss, and are a form of scarring. This scarring occurs in the dermis (the middle skin layer) which can break down after being constantly stretched.

Both men and women can get stretch marks. The body areas most often affected include the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, and lower back. Scars after burn, injury, or other trauma, such as surgery, form when the dermis is damaged.

As a natural part of the healing process the body forms new collagen fibers to repair the damage. The new scar tissue will have different quality and texture than the surrounding tissue.
